This week on Square Mile Reports we take a look at the subject of Gay Marriage. The subject has received a lot of press attention due to the recent legalisation of gay marriage in six American states (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.) Under current UK law, gay people are allowed to enter into a civil partnership which provides the same legal consequences of marriage. However, many believe that gay people should be allowed to get married so that they have the equal rights as heterosexual couples. The Prime Minister David Cameron has said he is in favour of Gay Marriage and it is a coalition government policy to legalise Gay Marriage before the next election in 2015.
We asked local residents of the Square Mile their opinions on the subject, interviewed two young people Charlie Woods and Chandni Allen about their experiences of growing up in Leicester as a LGBTQ+ person. Finally we spoke to local poet Jo Twist about the experience of coming out and society's view of homosexuality.
