Let us introduce ourselves…

DemonFM is an award-winning student radio station based at De Montfort University in Leicester, England.

We broadcast throughout the academic year; with our programming covering everything from talk and music shows, to our more specialist news and journalism programmes. Our programming caters for young people living and studying in Leicester, playing a cross-section of music genres mixed with our lively presenters and talk-based programmes.

DemonFM is run by a team of volunteer students from De Montfort University. We also cover local events and, most importantly, produce excellent shows for our listeners. Lot’s of our members at De Montfort University are studying an array of courses from media to journalism, plus many other study unrelated courses which provide us with a wealth of talent to draw from.

Our members work in a variety of roles, including presentation and production of shows, live events programming, news and current affairs production, technical assistance and station management.

We provide a great opportunity for those wanting to get involved in broadcasting while providing a stepping stone to the radio industry. So if you are interested in getting involved in any area of DemonFM, please use our contact form to get it touch with us.

Our History

DemonFM was founded in 1995 as a society at De Montfort Students’ Union. It was set up by the Communications Officer of the time, Rob Martin. Before gaining a community radio licence in 2009, we broadcast under Restricted Service Licences. This involved month long broadcasts on local FM radio. The first licence broadcast on 106.4FM from 29 September 1995 to 26 October 1995 and over 14 years later, we broadcast our last of 25 RSLs on 30th November 2008.

In spring 2009, thanks to a partnership between De Montfort University and De Montfort Students’ Union, DemonFM were awarded a five year community radio licence, meaning DemonFM would broadcast on 107.5 FM 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In 2014, DemonFM were awarded a five year extension to their licence and continued to broadcast on FM in Leicester until May 2019.  At present, from this point, DemonFM provides a modern online platform for its listeners.

The station is part of De Montfort Students’ Union’s award-winning Demon Media group which also comprises of The Demon newspaper and Demon TV.
